Apple is reportedly facing technical challenges in integrating AI-powered algorithms into its Siri voice assistant. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, many of Siri’s anticipated AI features will be released later than initially planned.
Late last year, Gurman reported that Apple was developing a new large language model (LLM) to enhance Siri in iOS 19. The assistant was expected to combine existing capabilities with new features, including improvements similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. A major update was supposed to roll out before iOS 19’s release. However, Gurman now claims that this update will not be available in June as previously expected.
Delays and Future Siri Updates
Some Apple AI division employees believe that the more advanced, conversational version of Siri might not reach users until iOS 20—an optimistic estimate. Meanwhile, the three AI features announced for iOS 18 are still expected to launch in May with the iOS 18.5 update.
Citing internal Apple data, Gurman notes that actual user engagement with Apple Intelligence remains low, indicating weak interest in the company’s current AI offerings. He also suggests that iOS 19 may not bring significant AI improvements.
“Everything I’ve heard suggests that iOS 19 will not bring significant consumer-facing changes to Apple Intelligence. This is because Apple is still focused on releasing features that were announced last year. It’s hard to work on future features until current updates are available to users,” Gurman writes.
When Will Major AI Enhancements Arrive?
Apple has faced difficulties in AI development before, so these delays aren’t entirely unexpected, adds NIX Solutions. However, if Gurman’s predictions hold, major Apple Intelligence updates might not arrive until iOS 20, which could mean waiting until 2027.
