Adobe has released a significantly enhanced mobile version of its Photoshop editor. The iOS version is already available, with an Android release planned for later this year. Unlike the previous simplified version, this new Photoshop app retains most of the popular desktop editing tools and introduces generative AI support.
Since 2010, Adobe has offered Photoshop Express, a simplified mobile editing app. However, the new mobile Photoshop is designed to be more powerful, offering a broader range of recognizable features. Both apps include basic editing tools such as resizing, masking, contrast and saturation adjustments, and object removal. While Photoshop Express is similar to mobile apps like Picsart and Facetune, the new Photoshop app provides an experience closer to the desktop version. It also syncs with Adobe Cloud, enabling work across multiple devices.
Features and Subscription Options
The free version of Photoshop for mobile includes essential tools like the Spot Healing Brush, Tap Select, layers, selections, masks, image compositing, and blending features. It also integrates with Adobe Stock and Creative Cloud apps such as Adobe Express, Lightroom, and Fresco. Additionally, it includes AI-powered Generative Fill and Generative Expand tools from Adobe Firefly.
Advanced features, including the Magic Wand, Object Select, Content-Aware Fill, Clone Stamp, and Remove Tool, are available with an $8/month or $70/year subscription. The premium plan, Photoshop Mobile and Web, offers highlight and shadow adjustments, advanced blending modes, color effects, styles, and integration with Photoshop on the web. Paid Photoshop desktop subscribers automatically receive premium access to Photoshop on mobile.
Adobe’s Mobile Strategy
This update is a logical step for Adobe. Photoshop Express, though useful for quick edits and social media graphics, was never a full-fledged Photoshop alternative. The new mobile app still has an optimized mobile interface but is aimed at creative professionals and more complex design tasks.
Adobe has not announced any changes to Photoshop Express, which remains available for $5 per month. However, it’s uncertain whether the company will continue supporting both apps, especially given the existence of Adobe Express, notes NIXSolutions. With Photoshop Express downloads declining in a highly competitive market, launching a more advanced Photoshop for mobile—especially with a free version—seems like a strategic move. Additionally, Adobe recently strengthened its position by acquiring the Mac and iOS app Pixelmator. We’ll keep you updated on further developments.
