Apple has officially released the final version of its new mobile operating system for all users. iOS 18 is now available for download and introduces not only long-awaited home screen customization options but also a range of useful everyday features.
Key New Features of iOS 18
One of the standout features in iOS 18 is the expanded home screen customization. Users can now arrange icons and widgets in any order, change their color, switch between dark or light themes, and even resize them. These options allow for a more personalized user experience.
In the updated Control Center, users can now rearrange icons and toggles. For the first time, iOS 18 also allows for customization and even removal of elements on the lock screen.
Enhanced Photo and Messaging Experience
The Photos app has seen a major upgrade, with a simplified search function and new collections like “Recent Days,” “People and Pets,” and “Trips.” AI algorithms now offer more accurate sorting of images, and users can pin favorite collections for quick access.
Messages have also received a variety of improvements. New text formatting options, such as italics, underlining, and strikethrough, have been added alongside new text effects, emojis, and stickers. Users can now schedule messages for later and even send messages via satellite when Wi-Fi or mobile networks are unavailable. A new real-time call transcription feature has also been announced, which will automatically save transcriptions in the Notes app.
Safari, Privacy, and Apple Intelligence
Safari now includes a Highlights feature to display key information on web pages, a revamped reading mode, and a Distraction Control mode to hide unnecessary elements such as ads.
A new Passwords app provides quick access to login credentials and account information, featuring end-to-end encryption and secure password generation.
In terms of privacy, iOS 18 introduces the ability to block or hide apps, limit access to contacts, and ensure safer use of third-party accessories with iPhones. These improvements underscore Apple’s ongoing focus on user security.
Although Apple’s new Intelligence Package isn’t fully rolled out yet, some features have been announced, including Writing Tools for text work, Memories in the Photos app for creating movies, and Clean Up, which can detect and remove distracting objects from photos. Users will also be able to record, transcribe, and merge audio in both the Notes and Photos apps.
Siri has also been updated with a new design, improved voice-to-text recognition, and the ability to quickly switch between voice and text input. Additionally, Siri can now answer questions about Apple device settings and functions.
iOS 18 is available for all Apple “numbered” smartphones starting from iPhone 11, as well as iPhone Xs, Xs Max, Xr, SE (2020), and SE (2022). To install it, simply go to the Settings app (General – Software Update). For more details, visit Apple’s official website. We’ll keep you updated as new features are announced.
