Last Monday, Apple announced a partnership project with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into iOS 18. The two companies did not disclose the terms of the agreement, but according to unofficial information, Apple is not paying OpenAI anything. The Apple-OpenAI partnership “doesn’t offer significant revenue for either party, at least not initially,” Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman learned. Apple believes that the effect that integration with iOS 18 gives OpenAI is “equal or more valuable” than cash.
“The agreement includes the integration of ChatGPT, a digital assistant that responds to information requests in simple words, into Apple Siri and new writing tools. Apple is not paying OpenAI as part of the partnership, according to the people, who asked to remain anonymous because the terms of the deal are confidential. Instead, Apple believes that promoting the OpenAI brand and technology on hundreds of millions of its devices has equal or greater value, these people believe,” the analyst writes.
Future Revenue Sharing and User Benefits
In the future, Apple intends to enter into revenue-sharing agreements with developers of artificial intelligence systems, notes NIXSolutions. As a result, the iPhone maker will receive “a share of AI partners monetizing results on Apple platforms.” ChatGPT integration with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia will be free for users who find it in demand. ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to log into their accounts to unlock additional features. Currently, the ChatGPT app for iOS includes a subscription option, for which Apple receives a commission of 15% to 30%.
