iPadOS Adoption Mirrors Trends in iPhones

Among tablets, iPadOS 18 powers 63% of iPads released in the last four years, while iPadOS 17 runs on 27%, and 10% use earlier versions. Considering all functioning iPads, 53% have iPadOS 18 installed, 28% are on iPadOS 17, and 19% run older versions.

Apple gathered these statistics from devices making App Store transactions as of January 21, notes NIXsolutions. The distribution is nearly identical to adoption trends for iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 from a year ago. For example, in January 2024, 76% of iPhones released in the prior four years ran the latest OS, while the share was 66% among all iPhones. Similarly, 61% of newer iPads and 53% of all iPads ran iPadOS 17 during that period.

How Apple Compares to Android Updates

While Apple devices see consistent and timely OS updates, Google has not published detailed monthly Android version statistics since October 2018. This is due to the fragmented nature of Android updates, which depend on individual manufacturers, except for Google’s Pixel series.

These statistics highlight Apple’s continued success in encouraging users to upgrade to its latest software versions. Yet we’ll keep you updated as more insights on platform adoption become available.
